Fresno’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration 27-year legacy is in jeopardy of being lost
Fresno, CA - The 2010-11 Rev. Dr. Luther King, Jr. Unity Committee (MLKUC) is reaching out to find a way to fund another year of celebration and commemoration around King’s birthday, as they are in jeopardy of losing a 27-year legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebration in t he City of Fresno.
Due to the City of Fresno severe budget cuts, the MLKUC will not receive funds this year.
Each year the City’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday celebration has gamered over 5,000 people collectively from the four days of festivities, where residents from across the Greater Fresno area have come to participate.
Although there is no funding from the City of Fresno, Mayor Ashley Swearengin, and city manager, Mark Scott, are still supporting the committee with the efforts to raise funds.
The Committee is currently seeking out sponsors to help celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy in the City of Fresno. Brian Angus, new EOC executive director, has stepped forward to help support the Committee by sponsoring the program booklet and the annual event calendar for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
Business and community supporters can sponsor by buying ad space in the program booklet and supporting the overall event.
This years theme: Living the Dream, Let Freedom Ring for LOVE: let Our Violence End, will be featured throughout the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Festivities starting at the first event on Friday, January 14th through Monday, January 17th. The four days include the following eight events:
